The Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) Foundation is proud to announce a new scholarship fund established by Project Golf to support students in the College’s Sports & Turf Management program. The Gary Schaal, PGA, Sports & Turf Management Scholarship will award two (2) scholarships annually at $2,500 each, with a special focus on students from veteran families.

“As someone deeply committed to the growth of the game, I’m incredibly proud to help invest in the next generation of leaders in golf and turf management. Through these scholarships, we’re not just backing students from veteran families—we’re strengthening the future of the entire industry, starting right here in our community. It’s an exciting step forward, and I’m honored to work alongside HGTC to make this vision a reality,” said Gary Schaal, PGA, Executive Director of Project Golf.

Project Golf, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Gary Schaal, PGA, is dedicated to improving the lives of disabled veterans, underserved youth, and those new to the game of golf. This new scholarship honors Schaal’s lifelong commitment to introducing people to the sport and advancing the golf industry.

“We are deeply grateful to Project Golf for this meaningful investment in our students and their futures,” said Dr. Marilyn “Murph” Fore, HGTC President. “This scholarship not only supports academic and career success but also honors the legacy of a true golf ambassador and community champion, Gary Schaal.”

The HGTC Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to support the programs, services, and activities of Horry-Georgetown Technical College, benefiting both students and employees, and strengthening the College’s connection with the community.

“This partnership with Project Golf is a natural extension of our commitment to students and the local industry,” said Shannon Detzler, President & CEO of the HGTC Foundation. “We are honored to steward this scholarship that will change lives and further opportunities in the golf and sports turf sectors.”
